Humpback Whales!

Hi Y'all!

I have to say, today was my favorite day. I thought the whales were the coolest thing ever. So interesting, that I am going to be writing my paper on them. I took notes of what the lady was saying. Here they are:
Humpback Whales
  • Fluke print: the area in the water after the whale submerges
  • 90%lung capacity
  • Can submerge for 30 min or more
  • Could blow up 1200 balloons in one breath
  • Bright green patch- pectoral flippers
  • Flippers are 1/3 length of body, can be 15 ft long
  • Do not sleep but shut off half of their brain to rest at one time (logging)
  • Whales travel to Silver Banks but there is no food there\
  • Store up their food at Stellwagen Bank
  • Need a blubber layer to survive
  • They like to eat in plant filled waters
  • Need to gain 10-12,000 lbs
  • Like to go to plant filled waters
  • Inch long hair on nose- sensory, vibrations
  • Make noise while travel
  • Mostly solitary
  • Sometimes seen in groups of 2-3 but only for a short term
  • Do not choose mates for life
  • Eat sand eels
  • Deep feed on the bottom of the ocean by scraping one side for fish
  • Will only use left or right side- percent like left or right handed people
  • Growth spurt when just born and again at 4-5 years old
  • Breaching= jumping
  • Pectoral flippers are used to increase surface area to act as a heat duct so they don't overheat
  • Theory of why whales breach- to knock off barnacles or particles or to attract another whale
  • Pleats on lower portion of mouth allow jaw to expand while feeding
  • Throat size is only the size of a grapefruit

See you tomorrow!
