Whale Watching!

On Friday 08/01/14, the class went whale watching as our last field trip.  Before the boat took off everyone was very excited for the trip ahead, but then... the boat started moving.  Unfortunately, then not everyone was not so happy.  Sea sickness decided to make its way into some on our classmates, and our TA.  But, it was all worth it, when we got to the whale watching site we were very informed by our guide that we were about to see Humpback Whales.  We saw two Humpbacks, North Star and Hippocampus, they are identified by the marks on their tails.

They weren't very active because they were diving down for food.  They dive and stay without breathing for about 4-5minutes at a time to collect their food like plankton and krill.  They were very focused on gathering food because when mating season comes around, they travel south to the golf, where there isn't much food to eat.  Over all, although they whale weren't very active, they were still an amazing site to see.

Assignment Part 2 - The Mysterious Shells

When we discovered the colorful shells on a flat large rock, at first it was not quite so obvious what they were.  After some more exploring we learned that they were in fact either Brown Lipped Grove Snails (Cepaea nemoralis) and/or White Lipped Land Snails (Cepaea hortensis), which are close relatives of the Brown Lipped Grove Snails. 

After much consideration, which included ignoring the fact that it was in fact  and research I found out that the shells, which were broken when found on the rock, got there from one of their largest predators, the Song Thrush.  The Song Thrush will use a flat rock, also known as a Thrush Anvil, to smash the snails onto the rocks in order to break the shell and eat the snails.

Underneath the docks at the Barking Crab

During class on 7/13/14, we were instructed to break into groups and look at a section of a dock behind the Barking Crab, I was a part of Team Barnacles with Stephanie and Cathrine.
We, as Team Barnacles, chose to explore an area of the dock that was in the shade.  We saw a vast amount of plant life and animal life, and for our assignment we decided to focus on 16 plants/animals that we thought we could identify.  The first very noticeable plant that I would like to discuss is the deep green leaf that attaches itself to the side of the dock. 
It seemed to resemble lettuce, and after much research we decided that it is Ulva Lactuca.  We also noticed this red/orange plant that grew on the dock, and under the dock.  After scraping some of it off and into a cup we noticed that it seemed to have a porous and spongy quality.
After much talk of what it could be, we agreed on the Velvety Red Sponge. Also in the picture above is what seems to be a "fluffy tree", as Stephanie called them.  After looking through the guide book, we decided that it is a Frilled Anemone.  We also noticed a longer plant, that seemed to be pinkish in color.
We came to the conclusion that it is a Wine-glass Hydroid, since it was pinkish brown in color, and was fluffy and long. Next, we noticed two types of seaweed, which are in the picture below.
The seaweed that is located above my hand is thought to be Fucaceae. We also believe that the seaweed located below my hand is Knotted Wrack Seaweed.  Then we noticed the mussels that have attached themselves to the dock.
They are Blue Mussels, and when we looked at one of the mussels more closely, we noticed a somewhat orange colored plant that looked similar to a honey-comb, which we decided was a Golden Star Tunicate.
We then noticed a little creature that was sitting on one of the mussels we took out of the water to look at.  We placed the animal in a cup of water and examined the organism and decided it resembled a shrimp of some sort.  
Then we added some plant life in the water, which the animal seemed to respond to as it began swimming around more.  We also noticed that more shrimp like creatures were attached to the plant life that we added in the cup.
 We decided that these little shrimp are Hyallela Azteca. Then there was another organism in the cup that was on a piece of plant life.  It almost looked like a stick, and seemed to be able to bend due to 5 joint like sections on its body.
It looked like a Smooth Skeleton Shrimp, it is located in the picture above on the left-hand side of the cup. We also saw a lot of barnacles that we identified as Thatched Barnacles. After we were done exploring the side of the dock, we got to explore the animals that were caught in a lobster cage.
We decided that the crab seen in the picture above is a Jonah Crab. We also saw another type of crab that we decided was a Common Spider Crab. Also, the jellyfish that the Common Spider Crab is eating, that we saw floating around in the water as well is a Moon Jellyfish.
There were also lobsters that we thought could be Northern Lobsters.
 Lastly, we saw a starfish that happened to get caught in the lobster cage.  We decided it was an  Asteroid Sea Star.

First Day at Boston Harbor

We arrived at the Boston Harbor at roughly 2:00pm on 7/12/14, and my first impression is that the harbor is teeming with life. We started off observing the ducks on the water and feeding the Striped Bass fish bread crumbs.


I also noticed that there were also small jellyfish in the water as well.  We then moved on further to see a broad view of the harbor, which was when we noticed more bird life that seems to live near the Boston Harbor.


It was entertaining to watch this bird dive underwater to fish for food.  From researching birds that dive underwater, and then searching what birds live in Massachusetts, I have deduced that this bird is either a Double-crested Cormorant or a Great Cormorant.  We also noticed tide pools, and plant life that exists in the Boston Harbor.  There were also Jellyfish that accidentally get pushed into the tide pools from winds and tides.


Then roughly thirty minutes later, we began the boat trip with HBC around and outside the Boston Harbor.  I noticed many of the islands that we talked about in class today. Such as Deer Island, which has the egg shaped buildings that holds human waste.


On the way to George's Island we say a boat stranded on Nix's Mate, an area that was once and island and is now mostly submerged, unless the tide is low.


We then took a stop at George's beach, where we admired the people enjoying the beach and fort.


As the boat ride continued, I noticed the wind power turbines that are around the Harbor.


On the way to Hewitt's Cove, Prof. Berman decided to man the boat.


When we arrived in Hewitt's Cove, the thing I noticed most was the new condos that seems to take away from the natural environment, and the remnants of a navy shipyard.



Then, on the way back to Boston Harbor we noticed the same boat on Nix's Mate, but since the water receded more, it was more apparent at this point how truly stuck the boat was.


Overall, my first impression of the Boston Harbor was that it have improved greatly from the hardships of pollution.  The Harbor and the outer islands are highly populated with humans, fish, birds, and plant life.  It is clearly a beautiful example of functioning marine biology that I cannot wait to explore further.
