Welcome to Snails to Whales, Bruce Berman's Boston Harbor blog focused on both the little and the big things that make Boston Harbor such an extraordinary place to live, work and play. It is also a place for my Boston University students and my colleagues at Save the Harbor / Save the Bay to share their work and experiences.

Boston Harbor Tour
The Boston Harbor tour was a great experience, and offered the opportunity to see the great city of Boston in a new light. As we traveled to Quincy, we passed many islands in the harbor including the Deer Island sanitation plant, Spectacle Island, George's Island, and many others. During the navigation of the islands I noticed lots of bird activity. Some of the species were Cormorants and Turns, as well as some different types of Gulls. When we passed by George's Island I noticed the Turns were feeding on a large school of bait fish. This trip was a true awakening for me because I had always thought of Boston Harbor being a polluted ecosystem, but since the remarkable clean up effort the harbor is again a rich ecosystem with a lot of biodiversity.
